Heh, but of course you don’t even need the wires if you control the computer. For example, pulseaudio lets you redirect audio streams, so you can record with them.

Surely the only things that make it too irritating/unfeasible to "download" music are

    (1) Bandwidth limiting: Downloading at 1x isn’t much different from recording to cassette.

    (2) Crappy quality: If buying a CD gets you noticeably better quality audio, people might be more likely to do it.

    (3) Feeling of guilt. This seems to have kicked in for me now I have money (i.e. am no longer a child) and thus am actually able to buy music if I so choose. I wasn’t so choosy five years ago.

You can work around bandwidth limiting pretty easily on many sites, in one of two different ways. Often, they’ll allow a higher banwidth initially, and then throttle it back to 1x; if you use a downloader that can resume, you can restart the download every time it gets throttled. If not, then you can often at least download a few dozen things in parallel at 1x.

In some cases clive is the easier solution. Audio streams can subsequently be dumped with mplayer (-ao pcm). Maybe you want to give it a try.
